Your Prairie Fire Hair Guide
Everything you need to know to feel confident, informed, and beautiful—in our wigs.
Whether you’re new to wearing wigs or simply want to better understand of what makes Prairie Fire Hair unique, this Wear & Care guide is your starting place.

Why Wig Fit Matters
Getting the right fit is one of the most important steps in choosing a wig you’ll actually enjoy wearing. A properly sized cap means comfort, security, and a more natural look—no constant adjusting, no awkward gaps, just a secure fit that lets you move through your day with confidence.
Please Note
These measurements reflect the approximate dimensions of our wig caps, not the exact measurements of your head. Because every head shape is different, there is no universal fit. When in doubt, it’s often best to round up to the next cap size for comfort and flexibility. Each listing will indicate the cap type for that wig. If a cap type is not noted, detailed measurements for that specific wig will be included in the product description. Please review each listing carefully.

How to Measure
Use a flexible measuring tape and wrap it gently—don’t pull too tight. Measurements should follow the natural contour of your head.
Ear to Ear (Hairline): Place the tape just above the crease where your ear attaches to your head, then go across the forehead to the same spot on the other side.
Circumference: Start at your front hairline, wrap the measuring tape behind your ears, around the nape of your neck, and back to the front. Keep the tape snug but not tight—just enough to follow the natural curve of your head.
Front to Nape: Start at the middle of your front hairline, run the tape over the crown, and stop where your skull ends and your neck begins—roughly in line with your earlobes.

Care Guide
Taking care of your wig helps it last longer and keeps it looking and feeling its best.
With regular daily wear, most wigs only need a full wash about once a month, depending on how much product you use and your environment. Below is a simple, gentle routine adapted from the Pitcher Method described in Jason Archer’s book Wig Life (shared with permission). This method protects your lace, preserves your knots, and helps reduce shedding over time.
Always handle with care—human hair wigs are delicate, especially around the lace and knots.
Why this method?
Traditional washing methods, like submerging the wig in water or rinsing it under a strong faucet can actually cause harm. When submerged, delicate single knots can swell and begin to unravel, loosening the hair over time. High-pressure rinsing or agitating the wig in water can also lead to wash-through, which is when strands of hair are pushed through the lace to the inside of the cap.
The Pitcher Method helps avoid these risks by letting you control the water’s pressure and direction. By pouring water gently through the cap using a pitcher, you reduce stress on the hairline and keep your wig in better condition longer.
Step 1: Prep & Cleanse
- In a spray bottle, mix 2 tablespoons of sulfate-free shampoo with ½ cup of lukewarm water. Shake well.
- Turn your wig inside out and lay it flat on a clean towel.
- Spray the shampoo mixture generously on both the hair and inside of the cap.
- Use your fingers to gently distribute the product on the inside, through the hair and around the hairline.
- Fill a small pitcher with lukewarm water. Holding the wig by the crown, slowly pour the water through the cap to rinse out the shampoo. Repeat if necessary to get out all of the product.
- Gently squeeze out excess water.
Recommended shampoo: Amika Hydro Rush, Redken Acidic Bonding, or Kenra Moisturizing Shampoo.
Step 2: Condition
- Turn the wig right side out and place it on a fresh towel.
- In a second spray bottle, mix 2 tablespoons of conditioner with ½ cup of cool water and shake.
- Spray the conditioner from mid-shaft to ends only. Avoid the knots and cap base—conditioner can loosen knots and cause shedding.
- Let sit for 3–5 minutes. Then, turn the wig inside out again and rinse using cool water from the pitcher, pouring gently through the cap, rinsing out all of the product.
- Towel blot gently (never wring).
Recommended conditioners: Redken All Soft, Kenra Luxe One
Step 3: Seal the Knots & Dry the Cap
- Once the wig has been towel-dried, lightly spray the inside of the lace top with a knot sealer to help reduce shedding over time. Not too much or it will flake.
- Blow-dry the inside of the wig until it is completely dry. This sets the knot sealer while also preventing the hair from swelling which loosens knots.
Recommended: Walker’s Top-Loc Knot Sealer
Step 3: Detangle & Air Dry
- Spritz a leave-in conditioner or detangler on damp hair (again, mid-shaft to ends), and brush gently with a wide-tooth comb or Wet Brush—starting at the bottom and working your way up.
- Place the wig on a mannequin head or collapsible stand and let it air dry overnight for best results.
Recommended: Amika The Wizard Detangler, Redken One United, or K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask.
Step 5: Finish with Hair Oil
Once dry, apply 2-3 drops of Prairie Fire Hair Oil through the ends and mid-lengths to soften, add shine, and help prevent dryness. Use sparingly—our formula is lightweight and designed specifically for human hair wigs.
